NUEVITAS, CAMAGÜEY.- The Nuevitas Fishing Base Business Unit (UEB) has exports in its work, an indicator that they plan to diversify to increase contributions to the economy of the country and the entity.

Gerardo Izquierdo Rodríguez, head of Fishing Operations, specified that for this purpose they capture the conch, clean the mass and send it to the Industrial Fishing Company of Santa Cruz del Sur (EPISUR)there they process and export it because they have a license for the activity.

The previous calendar closed with 96 percent compliance with the plan, a creditable result if one takes into account that they only had 30 percent of the physical fuel available – with respect to what was planned – and the bad weather in the month of December, causes that demanded greater effort on the part of the group.

By October 2024, the order must be restarted until April, with the approval of having a high technical coefficient on the main vessels.

Likewise, they predict to gradually venture into exports of lobster, cucumber and sea sponge, Izquierdo Rodríguez said.

In the case of lobster, they already have the allocation to capture three tons, an order that will begin in the first days of July, a species that, in addition to shipping abroad, is demanded by the tourism sector in Cuba.

In the coming days, specialists and biologists from the Base Economic Unit and EPISUR will travel to the areas where the cucumber and sea sponge exist, to study and propose the figures to be extracted without violating the standards of sustainable fishing.

As benefits of exports, Izquierdo Rodríguez recognized the collection of foreign currency for the national economy and the business group, and in the entity it makes possible the acquisition of raw materials to lower the costs of added productions, equipment and spare parts for vessels.

He also considers that it is essential to sustain the industry after the conversion of the UEB Pesca Nuevitas as a Subsidiary Company takes place on July 1, an old demand of the group.

According to a publication on the official website of the Ministry of Economy and Planning, the legal director Ivonne Rodríguez Rodríguez said that there is a need to bring decisions closer to the places where economic activities are generated, and it comes with greater autonomy in financial management. and daily operations, the increase in efficiency in production cycles, the increase in volumes of goods and services created, the income and benefits for the worker, in the first instance, and also for the entity and the territory in which they reside.
