“Today users with medical prescriptions continue to be detained” — Futuro Chile

This Sunday, May 5, the “Cultivate your Rights” march will be held in Plaza Baquedano, in order to demand the end of the persecution of personal substance use and the creation of the new drug law. We talked about this topic with Andrés Ramírez, president of Movimental, the organization that organizes the event.

Ramírez began his speech by remembering the origins of the organization: “The foundation dates back 19 years, next year Movimental is celebrating 20 years, since the first call was made in 2005 and it began to run in 2007”

“Since then, a new drug policy has been demanded that, using the words of the government program, does not pursue personal uses,” he explained.

Clarity in the law

In relation to the current legal situation, Ramírez emphasized the persistence of problems, stating that “to this day users with a medical prescription continue to be detained.”

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of differentiating between trafficking and legitimate use: “Basically, an effective difference is made between what is trafficking and what is legitimate use and cultivation in order to advance precisely in a persecution of trafficking and crime.” organized that really works and that the innocent do not pay for the guilty.

Requesting greater clarity in the application of the law, Ramírez indicated that “we are seeing if we request a lowering of government protocols on other institutions so that the law is applied effectively,” since “we are involved as a community in a law that chase traffic.”

In relation to the medicinal use of cannabis, he highlighted that “mental health issues, glaucoma, cancer” can benefit from its palliative use, adding that “until some time ago the use of the cannabinoid was not studied in medical schools.” .

Cannabis clubs

Regarding the cannabis clubs, Ramírez mentioned that “they are operating under a medical prescription, they are medicinal clubs,” but he emphasized the need to expand their scope beyond the merely medicinal.

“They are established as non-profit associations, we grow privately for ourselves,” and “to take care of this legal figure, they withhold your prescription, so it is always with a medical prescription,” emphasized the president of Movimental.

Reclassification of marijuana in the US

Referring to the international impact, Ramírez highlighted the change in the classification of the substance in the United States, which has opened the debate on its regulation: “This change that is made to the classification of the substance comes from the UN” and “in the “In the case of the United States, it had a very similar classification to that of Chile”

“By making this change, this substance is conceived as less dangerous, and what we achieve is that the debate is opened,” Ramírez explained.

Finally, the president of Movimental made the call through Palabra Que es Noticia for the march: “On Sunday in Baquedano from 11 in the morning to march in the mall.”
