In other news from Gaza, Israeli authorities confirmed that a prominent Palestinian doctor died in an Israeli prison, in an incident that Palestinian authorities have called a “murder.” Adnan Al-Bursh, a surgeon and head of the orthopedic department at Al-Shifa Hospital, was detained by Israel more than four months ago while temporarily working at Al-Awda Hospital, a medical center located in the northern Gaza Strip. The special rapporteur of the UN on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, said in response to Al-Bursh’s death: “How many more lives will have to be lost before the Member States of the UN […] take measures to protect the Palestinians?”
On Thursday, Israeli prison authorities released 64 Palestinians whom Israel had detained in Gaza. One of them was returned dead, while another of the released people was in critical condition. Jamal Owiesi, one of the released prisoners, provided details of his arrest.
Jamal Owiesi: “I grabbed my children and we left the area towards a safer place, like Deir al-Balah, Khan Yunis, Mawasi, Rafah. I wanted my children to be in a safe place, but they left without me. The Israeli soldiers caught me and put me in a house. They ordered me to take off my clothes and I was left in my underwear. […] Then they brought a truck and put us inside it. They started hitting us. They hit me in the face. “We arrived at the detention area hoping they would stop beating us, but they didn’t.”
