The French Government announced a tightening of the rules for hyaluronic acid injections, which can only be applied by health professionals and under medical prescription, given the proliferation of illegal options to access this popular aesthetic treatment.

“Under the new decree, injectable devices based on hyaluronic acid will only be available to patients or clients with a medical prescription, and to doctors and dental surgeons for professional use,” said the French Ministry of Labor, Health and Solidarity.

Injections will continue to be accessible for both medical and aesthetic purposes, but obtaining them will require a prescription issued by an accredited health professional.

The possibility of delivery in pharmacies will be maintained, but only a doctor and not a third party without a license can be in charge of the application.

In the case of dentists, the decree restricts the use of these products to strictly health reasons.

The measure is taken to “better protect the population from illegal injections of hyaluronic acid”, a procedure that has experienced a real explosion of popularity in recent years, fueled largely by social networks.

“For several years, an informal and lucrative market has been developing in which individuals obtain and perform aesthetic injections of hyaluronic acid on themselves or others,” details the statement from the French Ministry.

It is a fashion that is not free of risks and possible complications, such as suffering from necrosis, loss of sight, arteries affected by the injection and other cardiovascular problems.
