València, June 14 (EFE).- The president of the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (SemFYC), Remedios Martín, has assured that although doing community medicine “is difficult”, it is time to work on it because it helps to “demedicalize “.

And that is achieved “based on the evidence that treating our patients gives us from this perspective, which we cannot forget and is part of our DNA,” he noted this Friday in Valencia.

“In health centers we treat diseases, but health is on the street, and that is where we must go. We can do activities in the centers, but it is important to also go to the civic centers, to the libraries, to the community, in short,” he stressed during the twenty-first Meeting of the Primary Care Community Activities Program (Pacap) of the SemFYC held at the La Fe Hospital in Valencia.

During that meeting, 250 specialists analyzed community health experiences made from Primary Care, according to a statement from the organizers.

Remedios Martín has asked that, despite the complex moment of Primary Care, this area not be ignored: “It is time to work on community health, with the benefits of its salutogenic perspective and the power of health assets.”

Community medicine can help offer “better healthcare and, thanks to the constant evaluation of actions, obtain evidence to make administrations understand the importance of betting on community health,” he stressed.

According to a study by the semFYC Drug Use Working Group, polypharmacy (simultaneous prescription of five or more medications) in Spain between 2005 and 2015 has suffered a drastic increase and for at least six months it tripled. In the case of excessive polypharmacy (10 or more medications), it was multiplied by 10. EFE
