Faculty of Medicine and its Institute of Public Health mourn the death of former academic José Manuel Araneda Hassan – UACh News

From the Universidad Austral de Chile, the Faculty of Medicine and its Institute of Public Health, they send their most sincere condolences and a fraternal hug of consolation to family, friends, former colleagues, former students and all the people who shared life with the outstanding professional and teacher José Manuel Araneda Hassan.

Professor Araneda was born on June 25, 1935 in the city of Quillota, V Region. In 1963 he graduated as a journalist from the University of Chile. In the same year he entered the Master’s Degree in Sociology at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, (Flacso). The following year he joined as a professor at the Institute of Sociology of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Chile.

In 1969, he arrived at the Universidad Austral de Chile, at the Institute of Public Health, in charge of the area of ​​Sociology of Health. In 1973 he was appointed Interim Director of the Institute of Public Health, with the purpose of organizing and hiring the academic body necessary for its operation, by decisions of the central level of the University, given the exceptional nature of the military intervention.

Likewise, he was founder and director of the January Course on Public Health for Graduates, taught by the Institute of Public Health of the UACh from 1978 to 2002.

In his academic life, in addition to being Director of the Institute of Public Health on four occasions, in 1991 he was appointed Director of Public Relations of the Austral University of Chile.

In 2002 he retired from our University and in 2017 he participated in the celebration of the 50 years of the Institute of Public Health, which he helped to form.

The Faculty of Medicine and its Institute of Public Health remember with appreciation the academic Araneda Hassan, highlighting that he was essentially a humanist, a critical analyst, both of the institutional policy of the University, as well as of public health policies and the national reality. , which constituted a seal in his role as an undergraduate and postgraduate trainer, which also marked the colleagues who participated with him in the academic work of the Institute of Public Health.
