The rector of the University of Jaén (UJA), Nicolás Ruiz, has discussed with the professor of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine of Seville and Doctor Honoris Causa from the UJA, José López Barneo, the future creation of a Biomedical Research Institute in Jaen.

It was in a meeting with the former director of the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville, which was also attended by the vice-rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer, María Victoria López, and the emeritus professor of the UJA Mari Ángeles Peinado.

At the meeting, the feasibility and opportunity of creating this mixed center was analyzed, which would initially be made up, in addition to the UJA, by the Jaén University Hospital and the CSIC, with the institutional support of the two departments of the Board of Andalusia with powers in University and Health, as reported this Tuesday by the Jaén institution.

The rector has explained that this center will have the capabilities of the University of Jaén in this area. In this sense, he recalled that the UJA has research groups in the areas of Experimental Sciences, Health Sciences and Engineering “that develop cutting-edge lines of research in the biomedical field.”

Likewise, he has referred to the studies that the UJA teaches related to degrees in Biology or Medicine, to which will be added those that will be taught starting in the 2025-2026 academic year in Biomedicine and Engineering and Data Systems.

“This institute that we are trying to promote will have a multidisciplinary character and a clear differentiating profile, very focused on technological aspects, integrating as a cornerstone and essential piece of the future health city of Jaén,” declared Ruiz.

Next months

As indicated, in the coming months it is intended to formalize an agreement between the five institutions involved to begin to shape this aggregate research structure. Likewise, he has announced that, in the medium term, the accreditation of the aforementioned institute as a biohealth research center by the Carlos III Health Institute, dependent on the Ministry of Health, is being considered.

Finally, the rector thanked José López Barneo for his willingness to collaborate with the University of Jaén and the rest of the institutions involved “so that this exciting initiative becomes a reality in the shortest possible time.”

“And that it contributes to developing future projects in our land that generate knowledge, better health care, wealth, well-being and opportunities for our young people,” he highlighted.
