Go Kyung Pyo talks about his mental well-being, his public image and his participation in variety shows

Actor Go Kyung Pyo recently spoke to Esquire Korea about himself, his public image, and his current activities!

Reflecting on how to stay fit, he said: “I used to control better [mi peso]. He could gain or lose weight as he wanted. However, lately there are areas where I am struggling to achieve my goals, which has me a little stressed.”

When asked if his problems were because he exercised less, he responded: “It’s part of it. I also find it more difficult to put actions into practice today than in the past. I still think exercise and meal plans are important, but I often weigh the opportunity cost. Life is short and I am increasingly attracted to immediate enjoyment. Sometimes when I exercise, it feels like wasted time and I question its importance. However, my profession requires me to prioritize self-care in a responsible manner, which adds to these contradictory thoughts that disturb me these days.”

Speaking about feeling burned out, he admitted: “I definitely feel burned out. Lately, I’ve been trying new things like YouTube and variety shows, expending a lot of energy I don’t usually use. There’s also the effort I put into showing a different side of myself, which sometimes leaves me feeling empty when I return home. Although I have fun and feel happy these days, I feel a little exhausted.”

And he adds: “Finding relaxation has been a challenge. Until last year, I had a different perspective. He could be authentic with others and still find peace. However, this year several planned activities have overlapped, which makes it more difficult to manage.”

Regarding his public image, such as his enthusiastic reaction to Zico’s “Any Song” during an awards show, Go Kyung Pyo commented, “There is an image of me that reflects that vibe, but it’s actually a little different from how I look.” I see myself. People really like that side of me, so I feel like I have to adapt and fit into it. I understand that a compromise must be reached. However, sometimes I can’t help but feel empty. I try to believe in myself and live authentically, but there seems to be a gap between my perception of myself and how others see me. That’s why I think I have to consider putting a brand on myself more seriously.”

Reflecting on his different facets, he explained, “I feel the most free when I’m alone. When I get excited, I enjoy the moment without caring about other people’s opinions. Then, when I notice others staring at me, I feel very small. Singing on the street or dancing at an awards show is similar. It’s not like I planned to do something; it’s more like when Seo In Guk briefly left his seat to go to the bathroom during a ceremony, and Ji Ho (singer Zico’s real name) sat down. Since we’re close friends, I was momentarily excited, genuinely happy to see him. I didn’t even realize people were watching; my body moved instinctively.”

When asked about his participation in “The Backpacker Chef 2,” the actor commented, “The show requires more variety show energy than I had initially anticipated. However, the filming seems like a moment of healing to me. These days, my mind is constantly busy, but during filming, I am totally focused. It is a direct job, unrelated to other concerns, with a demanding workload. The most important thing is that I enjoy the company of everyone who participates. Baek Jong Won, Lee Soo Geun, Ahn Bo Hyun, and Heo Kyung Hwan, especially, are warm people, and their presence alone lifts my spirits.”

As for whether the show attracted him for focusing on individual personalities, Go Kyung Pyo said, “Actually, what attracted me was that it wasn’t a show that put me in the spotlight. The reason why I haven’t participated much in variety shows until now is that I didn’t want people to have a fixed perception of me. I was hesitant to show my personal side like Go Kyung Pyo. Sometimes these fleeting aspects overshadowed my professional work. When I was younger, I bravely took on these challenges, thinking I could change perceptions with hard work. But experiencing it firsthand showed me that it’s not that simple. Now, as an actor, I aspire to be recognized for my roles in good productions and as a character.”
