María Soledad Seijo and María Viviana Quiroga

The resident doctors María Soledad Seijo (39) and María Viviana Quiroga (40) are accused of negligence. In their case, They attempted to intubate Cohn after his notable deterioration, but were unsuccessful.

They are accused of failing to secure the victim’s airway in time, something that also contributed to his deterioration and subsequent death. After that, they requested collaboration from the intensive care doctors, Maximiliano Andrés Ragazzoli and Marina Vanesa Vogelin.

In 2015, Quiroga was in his third year of residency at the San Isidro Hospital, so he had the obligation to cover two 24-hour shifts per week.

Maximiliano Andres Ragazzoli and Marina Vanesa Vogelin

Maximiliano Andrés Ragazzoli (39) and Marina Vanesa Vogelin (51), both intensive care doctors, are accused of acting negligently during Cohn’s crisis.

According to the request for submission to trial, both he and Vogelin participated in the failed intubation attempt and emergency maneuvers that followed, during which Cohn suffered cardiorespiratory arrest that led to his brain death since there was a delay in assisting him. After this, the patient entered the intensive care room, where he was in charge of Darío Ricardo Campos.

Darío Ricardo Campos

The doctor Darío Ricardo Campos (56), one of those with the most experience, is mainly accused of serious medical negligence. He is accused of failing to provide adequate diagnosis and treatment to Cohn when the latter was admitted to the hospital.

The head of therapy is also accused of acting negligently the day after the patient’s admission, contributing to his neurological deterioration and eventual death. According to his story, when he entered the guard, the 35-year-old was already in poor general condition and on assisted breathing.

On July 29 at 2 a.m., Campos ordered Cohn’s transfer to Italiano. An hour later, in this last health center, they performed various studies and confirmed the severity of his condition. At 8:00 he died, the cause of death being hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.

He is the one who gave the first medical report to the family on the morning of July 28. “I was very nervous, red-faced, sweating and having a lot of difficulty writing the report so I could transfer it to the Italiano”Mariano declared during the investigation.

The day Alejandro died, Campos called Mariano and asked him about his brother’s health. “The call was very unpleasant, it was like he wanted to know what was happening and I was guilty”Mariano continued.

Martín Montagna, Ana María Sanchez, Marcelo Rodrigo Toro Solano and Carla Setti

Montagna (58), Sánchez (58), Toro Solano (40) and Setti (39) are accused of medical negligence for not acting appropriately.

All of them were in the hospital when Cohn was admitted and did not diagnose him or provide treatment, which led to him being without the necessary assistance in one of the most critical moments. He was in a box for several minutes without being attended to by any of them.

  • Marcelo Rodrigo Toro Solano He is the doctor on duty who, upon a call to 911, went in an ambulance to the place where Cohn was with his motorcycle.
  • The document of the elevation to trial indicates that Martin Montagna, The chief of guard, in the investigation, refused to answer questions, arguing that at the time Cohn entered the hospital, he was operating urgently on a patient. This could be confirmed, in the same way that it was also confirmed that the next day, the 28th, yes he attended to it, Therefore, his participation in the incident cannot be ruled out.
  • For its part, during the investigation stage of the case Ana Maria Sanchez He noted that he does not remember anything that happened that day, and stressed that Montagna is the one who assigned the different guards to the doctors present.
  • Carla Setti, Another resident doctor said she never saw Cohn, explaining that when patients were admitted by ambulance they were in charge of the doctor who had taken them. In this case, the person who transferred it was Toro Solano.

Did Toro Solano lie?

Toro Solano said that on July 27 he was summoned to assist a person on the street, who was given a code yellow around 8:30 p.m. Always according to what he said, he verified Cohn’s state of health and recorded it in the medical history. Cohn, he maintained, arrived stable and conscious at the hospital and then transferred him to the shock room, informing the doctors on duty that he had noticed him dehydrated, handing over the patient’s medical history. After this, he retired to continue his activity in the ambulance. He stressed that he fulfilled the necessary diagnosis for the patient.

However, Their statements did not coincide with what was mentioned by residents Seijo and Quiroga, who reported that Cohn arrived at the shock room sector transported by the nurses who were in the pit area when the patient decompensated. Nor does it coincide with what the nurses themselves reported in their statements given under oath of law: they highlighted that there was no doctor in the pits when Cohn began to convulse, it was a decision made by the head nurse to transfer him to the shock room. This means that Toro Solano would have left Cohn at the hospital and left without checking him.

“There was a diagnostic and therapeutic omission on the part of those named,” states the request for elevation to trial. The nine doctors mentioned above They are accused of “culpable homicide” and “violation of evidentiary elements.”

The role of nurses is also key to the future of the cause. One of those who treated Cohn assured that, given his experience, he would have realized if he had fractures: “I had no blows, I had nothing”. On a nursing sheet she wrote down the conditions under which the patient had been admitted, but she assured that the sheet later disappeared.

The 10th doctor who was dismissed

On the cover of the case, at the beginning, There were 10 accused. When the fact became known, the traumatologist Sebastian Mariano Granatelli (49) was in the hospital, but was later dismissed.

This is because it could not be corroborated that at any time he had cared for Cohn. His role was to intervene when a patient was admitted with a bone injury (other than the skull or chest), and this was not the case. Something that confirms, once again, that the victim had entered the guard without any serious problems.

The mysterious death of Alejandro Cohn

According to the filmmaker’s family, on July 27, 2015 Alejandro Cohn was on his way to play a soccer game around seven in the afternoon, when suddenly He started to feel bad. He stopped his motorcycle on the sidewalk on Dardo Rocha Street, between Lima and Talcahuano in the town of Martínez, San Isidro district.

According to witnesses, a woman who was with her daughter observed the sequence and stopped her car to ask her if she needed medical assistance. Alejandro told him that he was dizzy, they called an ambulance and took him to the Melchor Posse hospital.

According to the testimonies revealed by the complaint, once they arrived, in the guard, Alejandro answered all the questions they asked him, which shows that I was fully aware. Nothing strange until that moment, he simply remained lying on a stretcher, since his blood sugar level had dropped, something common for a diabetic patient.

Minutes later his father arrived, who knew what was happening to Alejandro thanks to the warning from the woman who helped him on the street. The man asked that his son be treated and the hospital staff took Alejandro to another sector of the guard.

Hours later, they informed the family that Alejandro was in a coma, intubated in intensive care, without any type of explanation as to how it had ended up in that state.

Two days later, a doctor who was a friend of the family requested a consultation and recommended that they remove him from the hospital, since he understood that he was not receiving the care he needed.

They managed to take him to the Italian hospital, where other doctors examined him and found that He was brain dead and had multiple injuries. They could do nothing to save his life. At only 35 years old he died on July 29.

The autopsy revealed that he had fractures throughout almost his entire body. In the same Italian hospital they filed a complaint for having received a patient in conditions that were not compatible with the accompanying documentation.

This Thursday the second hearing of the debate will take place, in which Mariano and his parents, Beatriz Arroyo and Mario Cohn, are expected to testify. Mariana Masotti and Cecilia Sanguinetti, the two women who helped Alejandro when he fell ill on the street, are also expected to be there.
