María Cecilia Botero returned to the screens with a comedy series in which viewers will be confronted with some topics that continue to be taboo in Colombian society.

Regarding her return, the award-winning actress spoke with Infobae Colombia about the gender inequality that continues to spread on national television, but at the same time, she expressed her discontent with feminism: “I don’t need to become a man to fight against men.”

At 68 years of age and with a solid acting career, María Cecilia Botero broke the silence and raised her voice of protest against the differences that are still seen in the Colombian audiovisual industry. “Yeah, It must be said, we continue to see disparity here and everywhere. It doesn’t just happen in Colombia. It amazes me that you still see actresses in Hollywood raising their arms to ask, “Why does a man earn more?”

The differences in salaries between men and women on television is something that Marías Cecilia does not fully understand and, of course, does not share either. “It is not something justified. Doubts arise when we see that both characters are at the same level, have the same importance in the story and for both talent has the same rigor and demand, we do not see the reason to leave the woman at a disadvantage. The hours, the scenes and the quality are the same,” commented Botero.

However, what generates the greatest discomfort in María Cecilia is realizing that in other countries, even first world countries, this situation in which women’s work is devalued continues to occur in large productions.

“The worrying thing is that we are not talking about isolated cases or an issue that is only evident on Colombian television. In fact, in other industries this is much more marked. In other areas I think the discrimination is even worse. and that atmosphere that women are worth less, that seems tenacious to me at this point.

Despite the fact that when fighting for equal salaries, María Cecilia Botero is the first warrior to put her chest on the front line, she thinks that the battle should not be done from the side of feminism, a movement with which the television host also has several differences of thought.

“Feminists are going to kill me, but I think that ‘fighting’ from a feminine point of view, being feminine, is just as valid. Everything has its limits. It’s a good thing, but without the extreme to which they take it,” he said.

According to the talk that María Cecilia Botero had with Infobae Colombia, From her perspective as a woman, professional and mother, the feminist movement distorts and delegitimizes the true fight for gender equality, with which she does not strongly agree.

“The more you fight, the smaller you feel. What you have to do is demonstrate through life who you are, where you stand, where you want to go and why you are worth it, regardless of whether you are a man or a woman,” he commented.

However, the actress born in Medellín, Antioquia made it clear that she recognizes the importance of these currents existing and of putting the issues under discussion on the table to achieve changes. However,

“I think it is important that the issue of feminism exists. It is very important that women are fighting for our rights, to defend spaces, but at the same time, I think they get out of hand and exaggerate.”

“There is a fracture in the equality of rates and salaries, it is a reality. Why does a man have to earn more than a woman? If the work done is the same, the function performed is the same, this is a gap that should not exist as a society. A person should earn by what he does and not according to the gender he belongs to. Even so, I insist that there are things in which feminism is distorted, loses its coolness, its grace, and stops being mystical. We must assert ourselves as human beings, but as equals so that our voice gains value,” reiterated ‘María C’, also known as the actress who for years presented Caracol television’s morning show Día a Día.
