What if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were stripped of their titles of dukes? That question was asked of an expert on British royalty, and the answer was surprising.

Ingrid Sewardeditor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, spoke with The Royal Beat and, among other things, said what would happen in the hypothetical situation in which he took away the nobility titles from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

“I don’t think anything will happen with the titles because, if they lose them, Harry is still a blood prince and Meghan, instead of being the Duchess of Sussex, would be the princess harry” Seward said, according to the English Mirror, adding: “I think it’s probably better to leave it because it seems unpleasant, it seems unnecessary.”

This is not a whim, or anything like that; It is royal tradition for a princess to take an official title with the name of her husband. If Meghan, 42, and Harry, 39, were to stop being the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, he would be known publicly as Prince Harry and she as Princess Harry.

The stripping of the Sussexes’ titles was a topic of conversation because, according to the Mirror, they were asked to be “stripped” of their royal status “because they use it to build a brand with which they can work for deals with Netflix and Penguin House.”

What it means to give up royalty

In January 2020, Harry and Meghan made a splash: They renounced their royal duties.

Before we talked about an alleged removal of titles by the King from a couple that had already renounced royalty, and perhaps that does not close you: How is he going to take away the titles of two who renounced them four years ago? There are differences between one thing and another.

Because, as we already said, Prince Harry is a member of the royal family. The prince will always be a prince since he is the son of the King.

In their case, the Sussexes announced that they were retiring “as first-ranking members of the royal family” to “become financially independent” and divide their time between the UK and North America.

Being the Duke or Duchess of Sussex is a noble title given to them by Queen Elizabeth II on May 19, 2018, when they married.

Meghan’s titles

Before being the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan was “Madam” and “Her Royal Highness.” This changed when she married Harry. Her full title became “Duchess of Sussex, Countess of Dumbarton and Baroness Kilkeel”.

Calling her “Princess Meghan” is technically incorrect and prohibited by British protocol because Markle is not a princess in her own right. That’s why she can use her husband’s name.

The title that the marriage did abandon when it renounced royalty was “royal highness,” as they abandoned royal duties.
