Madrid (EFE).- Green Council or Black Council, two Targaryen sides facing off for the Iron Throne: the second season of ‘The House of the Dragon’ arrives this Monday in Spain on MAX and viewers will have to choose, its protagonists explain to EFE , although for creator Ryan Condal there are no good guys or bad guys, simply “a broken family.”
“We are much more interesting than the Blacks,” says Glynn-Carney, who plays King Aegon II Targaryen, one of the main heirs to the Green Council Throne, flatly. “Although they surpass us in weapons, dragons and naval fleet, we are in the fortress of the castle, we have grown up there and we have the support of the entire town,” he remarks.
On the opposite side, House Velaryon is very clear that the Blacks are the side they should support in the civil war that is looming in Westeros.
“Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen was robbed of the Throne that rightfully belonged to her. All the lords saw it, knelt down and swore allegiance to a King he was not. They are breaking the law and therefore breaking their word and honor, which is something important,” argues Steve Toussaint (Lord Corlys Velaryon, nicknamed The Sea Serpent).
The house of Lord Corlys and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) will be a great help to the Blacks in the final battle. His strategic prowess, along with an enviable fleet of ships, could be the key to turning the tide of the battle against the Greens, who have several figures from the ancient court of King Viseys and one of the most powerful dragons in existence, Vhagar of the Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell).
“Aemond and Vhagar will be the key players in the war. They form a very powerful and dangerous team together, but also separately. Since he lost his eye, Prince Aemond withdrew into himself and became more violent. Even though he thinks he should be the one who should have inherited the Throne and not his brother, he will support him and be his trusted warrior,” notes Glynn-Carney.
The base of ‘The House of the Dragon’
The basis of ‘The House of the Dragon’ is the book ‘Fire and Blood’ by George RR Martin, and it broadly follows everything that is stated there. For this reason, and through these eight chapters, the civil war of House Targaryen can be started, also known by followers as “The Dance of Dragons” and that will change Westeros forever.
The Blacks, led by Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and her uncle Daemon (Matt Smith), will have to carry out their offensive against the Greens of King Aegon II and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) after the outcome of the last episode of the first season, in which Rhaenyra’s son, Prince Lucerys and his dragon Arraxx, died after an epic battle in the heavens at the hands of his cousin Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar.
That death, although apparently accidental, will be what triggers the war between the family to claim the Iron Throne and avenge the blood spilled.
Although the second season tries to choose sides, its creator, Ryan Condal, is “very clear” that this is a story “neither of good guys nor bad guys,” but simply of “a family that is broken.”
“They are human, with problems, complicated people, but there are no good guys or bad guys. In this season the only thing we do is solve the problems that we opened in the first season. There is more play, the universe opens up and everything is broader. That’s why there is going to be more conflict, more war, more dragons and more blood,” the creator remarks.
It also confirms that women will have an “essential role” in this season. “We are going to see characters evolve like Helena (Phia Saban) who had barely developed in the first season and here they acquire an important character,” she advances.
Saban confesses that he wanted to explore that “inner world that Helena has” and for viewers to see that despite her “shyness” and “lack of trust in people” she is a “strong and powerful person.”
