Rome (EFE).- American actress Sigourney Weaver will be awarded the honorary Golden Lion at the 81st Venice Film Festival, the organizers of the event, which kicks off on August 28, announced on Friday.

The actress of classics such as ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ (1988) or the ‘Allien’ saga has declared herself “truly honored” to receive this award.

“Receiving this award is a privilege that I share with all the directors and collaborators I have worked with over the years. I proudly accept this award,” he thanked in a statement.

The director of the Mostra, Alberto Barbera, maintained that “an actress of Sigourney Weaver’s caliber has few rivals”, thanks to her “important theatrical training”, her proven versatility and her long career as an icon, especially as the Lieutenant Ripley in Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’.

“She soon became an emblematic figure of the 1980s, when she acquired the image of an unprecedented heroine in the action genre, capable of victoriously resisting the duel with male models who until then had dominated epic and adventure films,” Barbera noted.

“Incessant search for identity”

After this milestone, he indicated, Weaver “opened other paths” in her “incessant search for identity,” which led her to auteur films, children’s films or comedy, “fleeing from preconceived labels.”

“The honorary Golden Lion is due recognition to a star who has known how to build bridges between the most sophisticated auteur cinema and films that dialogue with the public in a less rigid and original way, without giving up himself,” he added.

In addition to Sigourney Weaver, this year the Australian filmmaker Peter Weir, author of films such as ‘The Truman Show’ (1998) and ‘Dead Poets Society’, will receive this lifetime achievement recognition. Poets Society’, 1989).

The official program of the Venice Film Festival will be announced at a press conference on July 23.
