What a concert! Two weeks ago, at RockFM we had the opportunity to attend the concert of Scorpions in the festival Rock In Rio. A brilliant night in which the German band demonstrated its vigor, delighting the Portuguese public.

The Germans knew, when they announced that controversial farewell tour some time ago, that they were making a mistake. Since then, we have experienced everything; you can’t say that there have been no changes, but they have remained. These people will die on stage and they will do so giving good shows.

Therefore, to enjoy that show in the Lisbon Tejo Parkwe bring you the complete performance of Scorpions at Rock In Rio. A video that has been published on the Crazyscorps channel and has already accumulated thousands of views.

THE CHRONICLE OF THE CONCERT

At Rock in Rio, Klaus Meine’s men made it clear what they are going to come to Spain with and, we assure you, it is no small thing.. In fact, the group started off strong with “Coming Home”, a cut from ‘Love at First Sting’ (1984), an album that we will mention again later. Then, they showed us a “new” theme, the “Gas in the Tank” from ‘Rock Believer’ (2022). And that’s what the thing is about, having gasoline.

Meine, it is true, needs his long breaks in certain parts of the show – which are well covered – but, in return, he supports the weight of the songs quite well.At 76, he can handle almost two hours of concert and sing with great fluidity and precision, which is appreciated. He is not a vocalist who shows off or makes big movements, quite the opposite, but it works for him.

If you add to this a superb production and a band that has not lost any of its original power, you will have a concert that will not disappoint you for a single second.

Lemmy’s spirit

If anyone hits hard in Scorpions, it’s Mikkey Dee. The drummer seems to carry part of the spirit of his beloved Lemmy and it’s impossible not to think a little about Motörhead when he plays. Years ago, the Germans made a version of “Overkill“, but now, in his solo, Dee sounds as powerful as when he was in his previous band and, without a doubt, brings back memories of it. It is very great and we have to recognize it.

Everything changes… even the wind

One thing that is quite striking, although it is still a success, is that Scorpions have changed the lyrics of “Wind of Change” for a while now. The war in Ukraine caused the German band to decide, in 2022, to modify the theme to adapt it to contemporary times. It has rained a lot since the departure of the ‘Crazy World’ (1990)but ironically, the world seems to be crazier than ever. At this rate, Klaus is going to have to rewrite the lyrics again.

Of course, everyone sings the chorus. It never fails to impress to hear 85,000 people singing along to the lyrics of a song. There is no doubt that music is one of the best tools to unite people, especially in times like the ones we live in.

Once this anthem is over, Scorpions get playful again and give us the great “Tease Me, Please Me”. This song, from the same album by the way, is the musical equivalent of the smiling devil emoji and a perfect change of third at that point in the repertoire.

“The Same Thrill” would play before Dee’s drum solo and the “Blackout” (‘Blackout’, 1982). Then, “Big City Nights” and “Still Loving You”, along with the closing track “Rock You Like a Hurricane”. With the latter, eight songs from ‘Love at First Sting’ from 1984 could be added.

If you like the album, this is your tour, because the Germans played, to recap, “Bad Boys Running Wild”, “Big City Nights”, “Coming Home”, “Crossfire”, “I’m Leaving You”, “Rock You Like a Hurricane”, “Still Loving You” and “The Same Thrill”. Only “As Soon As The Good Times Roll” was missing to complete it.

And so, like hurricanes, with their great song as their flag, Scorpions closed an incredible evening. The person who wrote these lines is counting the days until July, because he plans to repeat in Madrid.
