In one of those memorable moments offered by the great music festivals, Serbian artist Marina Abramovic asked the more than 200,000 attendees from the main stage to keep silent for 7 minutes.

Just before PJ Harvey’s performance, the 77-year-old artist asked everyone present for a few minutes to reflect.

“I don’t know any visual artist who has done something like this in front of 175,000 to 200,000 people. The biggest audience I’ve ever seen was 6,000 people in a stadium and I thought: this is beyond anything I’ve done so far,” the Serbian artist added.

Why did he ask for silence?

Marina Abramovic previously said that the petition was part of an artistic show called “Seven Minutes of Collective Silence,” which she considers a “public intervention,” in her words, with which she hopes that those gathered at Glastonbury will reflect on the current situation. state of the world.

“Silence is a powerful tool that allows us to connect with each other in ways that words cannot,” Abramovic said.

“At a festival like Glastonbury, where sound and energy are in constant flux, these Seven Minutes of Collective Silence offer a unique opportunity for unity and introspection. It’s about being present together, experiencing the power of silence as one” , the artist has indicated.

Through videos on social media, you can see how attendees, after 7 minutes, applaud the artist and her initiative.

Days earlier, Abramovic had confessed that she felt “terrified” by what she considered a challenge, in which she could “completely fail”, although she said she wanted to “take the risk”.

After her appearance, the Serbian artist will star at the Worthy Farm venue in what will so far be her largest participatory work in the popular UK festival, which opened its doors on June 27 and will run until July 1.
