Suarez, Cauca
Strong fighting between the Army and the FARC dissidents occurred in the rural area of the municipality of Suárez in the middle of the visit of Vice President Francia Márquez to that region of northern Cauca.
Local mayor César Cerón expressed that “There has been material damage after the fighting in the villages of La Betulia and Playa Rica. A report of tranquility is given by the Military Forces and permanent accompaniment to the communities. It is a situation that we regret. “There is tension, concern and anxiety because these events continue to occur.”
Vice President Francia Márquez published “While in Suárez at a meeting with women’s organizations, clashes occurred in the upper part of the municipality. I have informed President Gustavo Petro and the Minister of Defense about this situation. We urge the Public Force to do what is necessary to prevent the confrontations from escalating and guarantee the tranquility, security and integrity of civil society.”
And he added “it is time for the violence to stop, it is time for our people to live in peace. Cauca, Suárez, all of Colombia has already suffered too much from the armed conflict, it is enough”.
The governor of Cauca, Octavio Guzmán, meanwhile mentioned that “we need to soon be able to guarantee tranquility and real peace actions in the territories. I want to invite the armed actors to build territorial peace. The people are tired, what happened in Suárez is reprehensible. The intervention of the Public Force is urgent, but also that we act in a disruptive way against the structural causes of this Violence that consumes our people.”
The Army finally indicated that “we are verifying the results in the face of possible effects on this illegal armed group”.
