“There is a setback in the discourse at the national level” on environmental issues

Within the framework of the Assembly of Mayors of the Argentine Network of Municipalities against Climate Change, ecoobjetivo.com.ar spoke with Enzo Cravero, head of the BioCórdoba Entity to find out his opinion regarding the event and the perspectives of actions to face the change climate.

– In the face of climate change, where would you say we are located, are we traveling the right path, are we going in the right direction?

– I always have an optimistic view of the subject. I believe that the cities have committed themselves, that the public agenda is in the cities. I think there is a setback with the discourse at the national level but, so far in the cities, we have been making progress. There are provinces that are also committed, such as the province of Córdoba, to progress in environmental matters and climate management. And there are an infinite number of leaders, managers and leaders, I would say business, social, different types of leaders; of citizens, and of generations, who are committed and convinced that we have to do something. So I think those dissonant voices against climate change will end up being silenced in such a movement that I believe continues to grow. We went two years ago to the previous Assembly in Mar del Plata and we were less than half of the municipalities that are here today, so I think this continues to grow and we continue to verify it. It would be important for it to be in line with the national State.

– Where should actions, education, investment, and training of societal actors be focused to continue advancing in the face of climate change?

– Yes, it is a demand to achieve the preservation of what exists, the conservation of what is about to disappear with environmental education and also awareness in all sectors. And obviously, that public policy, business policy, the policy of the knowledge sector, the policy of the cooperative sector is impregnated by the environmental perspective, that is, that we are all aware that the actions we take generate an impact on the environment, all. And that we have to do as little as possible. Once we have done an action that impacts, we have to mitigate or compensate for it. So, I think that of all places there is a 360 view of the intervention and in the State we have to have this level view in each area.

– At the international level, objectives have been set with a specific date, there is talk of the 2030 Agenda. Do you think we are on the right track to achieve these objectives with so little time remaining?

-Yes, the objectives are super pretentious. I think it’s also part of how the goals were conceived. They are lines of action, because there are not only the 17, but there are also actions, but they are lines of actions and objectives that are in some cases inspiring and in all cases are necessary. But, due to the short time we have until 2030, I think they will end up being inspiring but they will not present a great advance on each of the issues. I believe, I once again say the optimistic view, that the global public agenda is aware and is advancing the issue. The great powers worldwide, the European Union, China, and the United States, are generating strong policies and regulations to advance faster. So we help.
