Insecurity and violence continue to put citizens and authorities in Santander de Quilichao (Cauca) on alert, where the body of a worker at the La Cabaña sugar mill was found. The body was found dismembered, inside some sacks, left in the San Antonio neighborhood of the municipality.
According to the La Cabaña sugar mill, the victim was identified as Armando Ibarra, who was at work, but his colleagues and superiors lost total contact with him.. On April 24, 2024, their remains were found.

“The workers and managers of the La Cabaña sugar mill deeply regret this crime and vehemently reject these acts of violence. Likewise, we urge the corresponding authorities to carry out investigations to identify those responsible and ensure justice is done,” the statement reads.
The Association of Sugar Cane Growers of Colombia (Asocaña) also condemned the murder of the collaborator and expressed solidarity with the loved ones and relatives of the victim. They reported that since February 2023, the murder of six workers in the sugarcane agroindustry has been recorded. Five of the cases were recorded in the north of the department of Cauca.
“We demand that the competent authorities carry out the necessary investigations so that there is justice in all these cases and we reiterate our call for the necessary measures to be taken to guarantee the safety of all the inhabitants of this region,” reads the Asocaña communication.
In November 2023, the homicide of another sugar mill employee was also reported. This is Guillermo José Villegas, who, as reported Snail Radio, was murdered in the Obando district, located in the rural area of the municipality of Padilla, north of Cauca. The victim was attacked with multiple shots when he was working together with a colleague, with whom he was traveling in a vehicle to take a tour of the sugarcane crops.
“We send a message of solidarity and condolence to the family of our worker,” said the sugar company to which the employee belonged, who had been working as a security guard for more than nine years.. Due to the crime, from Asocaña they demanded justice and the presence of the authorities in the department.
“We cannot continue to tolerate the lack of guarantees for farm workers in Colombia, especially in northern Cauca. This crime is added to many other crimes of which farm workers in this region are victims, which include attacks with firearms, robberies, attempted homicides, extortion, among others.“, stated at the time the president of Asocaña, Claudia Calero, quoted by the media.
The discovery of bodies is not only being recorded in Cauca, but also in other cities and departments of the country. In Bogotá, for example, a citizen found the bodies of two men, which were under some garbage bags.
This disturbing discovery was made in the early hours of Tuesday, April 23, 2024, in the town of Kennedy. The victims were found in the Patio Bonito neighborhood, near a pipe and a residential area.
The news was promptly reported to the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) of the Attorney General’s Office, who were in charge of inspecting the bodies. According to authorities, the deceased were adequately dressed, which leads to ruling out the possibility that they were homeless people.
The main line of investigation focuses on determining how the bodies arrived at the site, exploring theories ranging from having been left there by a recycler to the possibility that they were thrown from a vehicle.
