Apparently several Cubans have heeded the Cuban president’s call to “resist creatively” and do not stop “innovating” in a Cuba in crisis. This is the example of a Cuban MSME that promotes, given the shortage of construction materials, polyfoam homes in Cuba or expanded polystyrene.

During the XIV International Construction Fair, in Pabexpo, the state media Cubadebate made an advertorial about Tecnoespuma, a company that aims to promote the manufacture of houses, columns, false ceilings, vaults for roofs and decorations, all made from polyfoam.

In this sense, the text states that “a prototype of a SIP panel, composed of two external plates and a polystyrene core, can be used to build modular homes.”

Lorenzo Méndez Alfonso, administrator of the aforementioned Mipyme, stated: “We are committed to the construction of modular homes in the country, with polystyrene elements. In this way, we will be able to manufacture houses at an affordable cost, which are ready in a short period of time. For these homes, almost no cement is used, but rather panels, polystyrene and screws. The roof also features a polystyrene core, with panels on both sides and a light coating.”

According to this source, SIP panels (Structural Insulated Panels) are an innovative and sustainable alternative for construction and in Latin America they are used in large quantities.

Assembled side by side, they offer a series of advantages for new construction and rehabilitation, this company adds, promoting as benefits: noise and heat reduction, energy efficiency and quick and easy construction.

A negative point is that, until now, they have had to import the materials and that does not lower the costs, therefore the objective of this gestation stage is to ensure that in Cuba the raw materials necessary to manufacture the homes are produced. an affordable cost.
