“It instrumentalizes us”: CGT union of Antioquia will not march tomorrow

Through a statement, the General Confederation of Labor of the department of Antioquia assured that it will not march tomorrow because President Gustavo Petro “instrumentalized” a space that “belongs to the working class.”

The CGT is divided in the country. A part of that group—just in Antioquia and other parts of Colombia—that is against the current union leadership, marched on April 21 in opposition to the Petro government.

The union’s keys to not marching:

“It is a date of and for the workers.” The CGT assured that the president “lost his control and the streets” and that is why he called for the workers to march alongside him on a date that is commemorative for the workers.

“We invite workers to express themselves on social media about the meaning of May Day without letting us be used,” he said. “This date is of the workers and for the workers,” she concluded.

“He will not mobilize to support the government.” The union indicated that it will commemorate this date with the workers through cultural, academic activities and rallies. But he will not come out to support the government or its “disastrous reforms.”

The complete statement.

Which unions will march? The Unitary Central of Workers of Colombia (CUT), the Confederation of Workers of Colombia (CTC), the National Coordinator for Change, the Southeastern Minga of the Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca, the Democratic Confederation of Pensioners and the Confederation of Pensioners of Colombia .

And a part of the CGT.
