After 47 years of experience, the prominent otorhinolaryngologist, Carlos Hernández Aravena, said goodbye to public service in the Los Ríos Region.

He began his studies as a surgeon at the University of Concepción between 1968 and 1977. Subsequently, he completed training in the specialty of Otorhinolaryngology at the Hospital del Salvador in Santiago for three years.

Coming from the Ñuble Region, Dr. Hernández joined the staff of the Hospital del Salvador in Santiago, later between 1989 and 1999 he moved to the city of Punta Arenas and then to the Base Hospital of Valdivia, where he completed 25 years of work in the Public service.

Why did you choose this specialty?

He points out that basically as a general practitioner he had to work too many night shifts (two or three during the week) at the Lota Alto and Bajo Hospital for six years.

He slept very little and continued working the next day. “It’s not that the next day I was free from the shift, I continued working and the truth is I got very tired,” she says.

“I chose this specialty because I liked it and I didn’t have those exhausting shifts. I needed to be quiet for at least one weekend to be with my family, my wife, my daughters, two of whom are doctors,” he says.

The ENT doctor added that he will continue practicing his profession in his private office and for a few hours at the Military Medical Center.

In honor of Dr. Hernández, a ceremony was held in recognition of his work after 47 years in public service.

The doctor mentioned that more than a ceremony it was a farewell party attended by his peers, ENT colleagues from the hospital and all the staff of the ENT service. The meeting took place at the Golf Club where doctors, staff and paramedics, medical help from the Clínica Alemana and the Clínica Costanera and people who knew him and with whom he had worked in one way or another also attended.
