The Government of Chile announced the Green Hydrogen Action Plan 2023-2030. which considers 81 actions to deploy an industry that reconciles economic development, respect for the environment, the territory and the communities.

During the milestone, President Gabriel Boric said he was “convinced that the well-being of Chile is at stake here in the coming decades if we know how to take advantage of this window of opportunity.”

“This industry is taking off in Chile, there are more than 50 projects that are in different phases of development, especially in Antofagasta and Magallanes, among many initiatives underway today,” he added.

The action plan was conceived by the Green Hydrogen Strategic Committee, a transversal group of experts and actors from different sectors and political fronts, including former President Michelle Bachelet and the former bi-minister of Energy and Mining, Juan Carlos Jobet, as a sign of consensus around the development of this State initiative, which seeks comprehensive progress for Chile.

If it is green hydrogen, the world begins with Chile

Chile’s geography offers advantages for the development of renewable energies, allowing Magallanes and Antofagasta – with their wind capacity and solar radiation – to emerge as strategic regions for the development of this fuel.

Chile has a unique geography that will allow it to position itself in the future as one of the most important countries in the development of green hydrogen.

According to the Bloomberg 2023 Climatescope ranking, Chile is one of the three most attractive economies worldwide for investment in clean energy. In addition, it is estimated that the National Green Hydrogen Strategy will allow investment opportunities for US $475 billion over the next ten years.

According to the Chilean Hydrogen Association, H2 Chile, until April 2024 there were 67 industrial projects around this fuel, with investments close to 5 billion dollars by 2025. Of these initiatives, 8 are underway as pilots, among them Haru Onu from HIF Global, conceived as the first operational e-Fuels plant in the world, located in the Magallanes Region.

By 2050, it is projected that Chile could provide a significant part of the world’s green hydrogen, demand that would reach 660 million tons.
