Rains caused floods in Urabá Antioquia and Chocó

Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in Urabá Antioquia and other neighboring areas of the department of Chocó.

In particular, the municipality of Nuevo Belén de Bajirá del Choco, which is in the middle of a crisis, with families affected and hectares of crops destroyed by floods.

Henry Chaverra Robledo, mayor of Belén de Bajirá indicated that at least 5,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed.

The most affected crops are banana, cassava and maracayá. On the other hand, more than 1,500 families are affected, with their homes flooded with loss of belongings.

The mayor requested help from the national government. In addition, he pointed out the urgency of intervening in the region’s rivers and canals, which are heavily sedimented and could cause even more damage from flooding.

Although the water level in homes has slowly begun to decrease, persistent rain continues to pose a threat to the community.

For its part, in Antioquia there are ten municipalities that were in emergencies due to rains and floods.
