In our opinion, it is important to exhaust all possibilities for solutions to the problems, despite the real lack of resources, and to establish priorities in the treatment of vital issues that affect the population in general.
Taking the above into account, on January 21 we published the letter sent by Consuelo Ibarra Jiménez, Answer without consolation, stating that she had visited Acueducto y Alcantarillado in the municipality of Ciego de Ávila, and there “the list of people who request to block the street due to problems with water is very long.” We considered the possibility of speeding up this action and putting a connection at the bottom of the stairs that gives access to the house, so that at least from there they could carry the water to drink, while continuing to use the water provided by the neighbor for other purposes.
For this reason, Luis Alberto Castellano Cabrera, who, at the time of receiving the response, served as director of the Aqueduct and Sewer Company in the province, sent to this Editorial Board, the 1st. April 2024, a letter in which he explains that “citizen Consuelo Ibarra Jiménez has been visited on numerous occasions, with the aim of responding and finding the best solution to her problem”; which she surely appreciates, due to her advanced age and that of her spouse, in addition to the health problems that she presents and, of course, for not having access to the vital drinking liquid for her consumption. .
Castellano Cabrera continues, explaining that “she was visited by the deputy director of the company and it was explained to her that a water connection was going to be installed, even though they have a cistern from which the two homes and the neighbors must be supplied. Below they do not provide access to get drinking water. Due to the above, the complaint remains pending.”
The response does not offer details of when the action will be carried out, perhaps that is why it is pending, but until when? Meanwhile, there is no other alternative for these two elderly people, retirees, who have to look for drinking water more than six blocks from their house.
We insist that agility in solving the problems that afflict citizens—if it is an aging population, even more so—requires collective thinking and, of course, the joint participation of community factors, as has been done in several communities of this main municipality and the province in general, benefiting thousands of people with the completion of hydraulic networks in homes that did not have the service.
