A Mendoza Police officer and a municipal traffic agent died this morning in the provincial capital after being hit by a drunk driver.

Both victims were attacked when they were organizing traffic. The fateful event occurred after 11:30 p.m. on Friday, while members of the Godoy Cruz Municipal Transit and police officers were carrying out a control at the Sarmiento Lane trying to organize traffic, since hours before A chain accident had occurred in the same area.

According to sources from the Ministry of Security and Justice, the 44-year-old driver was aboard a red Ford Eco Sport heading to the City of Mendoza, when he suddenly collided with the agents who were working on a section of the Access South that has no light.

Several calls to 911 alerted about the incident and the driver had to be taken to the 7th police station in Godoy Cruz, because witnesses to the incident wanted to hit him, according to sources. The motorist returned a result of 2.68 grams of alcohol in his blood and was arrested.

An ambulance from the Coordinated Emergency Service (SEC) arrived at the scene of the accident and it was then that the doctors confirmed that the Municipal Transit personnel had died at the scene as a result of the strong impact. The victim was identified as Santiago David Velazquez Guevara, 23 years old.

Meanwhile, another SEC ambulance that arrived at the scene urgently transferred the officer Leonardo Exequiel Alarcon Quiroga to the Central Hospital diagnosed with “serious multiple trauma due to an accident, multiple fractures in the pelvis, hip, lower limb and complete right leg amputation.” Minutes later, the 35-year-old police officer died in that care center due to serious injuries, the Ministry of Security reported.
