Narváez won the first stage
The Ecuadorian cyclist Jhonatan Narváez conquered the first stage of the Giro d’Italia, surpassing his two breakaway companions in the sprint, one of them Tadej Pogacar, and wears the first pink ‘maglia’ of the 107th edition of the Italian race.
After 140 kilometers of travel, Narváez (Ineos), who had already won a stage in the 2020 Giro, surpassed the German Maximilian Schachmann (Bora) in the sprint, while the Slovenian Pogacar (UAE), the big favorite, won the final victory on May 26 in Rome, he was third at the finish line.
These three runners arrived alone after jumping out of the peloton on the last climb of the day, three kilometers from the finish line.
Frenchman Alex Baudin entered the finish line six seconds behind, a few meters ahead of the first group of pursuers, who lost 10 seconds to the winner of the day.
Pogacar, in his first participation in this race, is seeking the Giro/Tour double this season, something that has not been achieved by a cyclist since the Italian Marco Pantani in 1998.
