With a view to increasing the number of operations and improving its construction infrastructure, the Surgical Unit of the José Martí Pérez Provincial Pediatric Hospital, in Sancti Spíritus, is undergoing a capital repair amounting to 12 million pesos.
As reported to Escambray Rolando Martínez Arrechea, head of the Investment Department of the Provincial Health Directorate, the actions undertaken include the increase of a fourth operating room – intended for emergency surgery -, in addition to the reconditioning of the pre- and post-operative areas.

“The work in the three current rooms,” he explained, “includes the replacement of all the carpentry and the sanitary, hydraulic and electrical networks; The location of new medicinal gases and the use of epoxy paint in the sterile area and the veneer in the non-sterile area will be executed with marble.
Dr. Dayana Camacho Gascón, deputy director of Medical Assistance at the health institution, highlighted the benefits of having a greater number of surgical positions, given the possibility of caring for more patients.
Today the waiting list of pediatric patients (from 29 days old to 18 years and 11 months) in need of different types of surgeries exceeds 200 children, he noted.
The surgical activity of the Pediatric Hospital in Sancti Spiritus is currently carried out at the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital; This prevents the sick from having to be transferred to other provinces. With the exception of non-urgent complex surgeries, the rest are being carried out in this healthcare center, said the specialist in Intensive Care and Emergency.
