The Japanese minister recalled that his country was the first Asian nation to donate money to the Amazon Fund, a contribution of around 2.8 million dollars

SÃO PAULO.- The Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishidaconcluded his two-day visit by Latin America in São Paulo with the commitment to support Brazil in the fight against deforestation in the Amazon.

Kishida expressed Japan’s willingness to contribute to development sustainable of the largest tropical forest and combat illegal logging in the region using satellite technology and artificial intelligence.

During a press conference, Kishida highlighted the importance of Brazil as “strategic partner” and supported the country’s priorities in G20 Presidency and as host of the Climate Summit in 2025.

Furthermore, he highlighted the potential of Brazil and Paraguay as exporters of food and natural resources, despite facing “issues of social disparity and poverty”.

Alliances and agreements

Accompanied by a delegation of 150 people including businessmen and officials, the Japanese leader met with the president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvain Brasilia, where forty agreements were signed in areas such as energy transition and cybersecurity.

For his part, Lula took advantage of the opportunity to request Japan’s authorization for the Brazilian meat importtopic that is in negotiation since 2005blocked by the health restrictions of the Asian country.

Kishida also visited Paraguay before returning to Brazil to meet the larger community of descendants of japanese abroad in Sao Paulo.
