Milei in the United States: economics talk, business with Musk, meeting with Infantino and an eye on Georgieva

For the first time aboard the presidential plane for security reasons, President Javier Milei flew to the United States for the fourth time in his mandate. This Sunday afternoon he arrived in the city of Los Angeles where he will participate in a global investors convention and is scheduled to hold a series of important economic meetings.

The head of state will speak around 5 p.m. this Monday at the Milken Institute Forum, which brings together businessmen, bankers, CEOs, funds and, among other prominent personalities, the director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, will also participate.

Milei’s participation will be through a conversation format with Conrad Kiechel, Executive Director of Events and Global Programming at the Milken Institute, with whom he will have a back-and-forth in which he is expected to expand on his government plan for Argentina and its look at the world.

As expressed in his various international exhibitions, it is presumed that Milei will once again lead a strong defense of deregulatory economic policies that facilitate free trade, accompanied by the usual criticism of the intervention of the State and the political class.

The official agenda distributed by the Milken Institute: in addition to Milei, the Queen of Jordan, the owner of SpaceX, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and the former Real Madrid player, among others, participate in the conference.

The Milken Institute’s call for the global convention has as its motto “shaping a shared future”: “Today we face critical questions, from dangerous geopolitics, to the climate crisis and the complexities of artificial intelligence, where we must examine its potential and its impact on workers, businesses and global markets.

Powerful international personalities are invited to the conference, as well as businessmen, bankers, CEOs and the world’s main investment funds. Some of the renowned guests include former President Bill Clinton, IDB President Ilan Goldfajn; Joe Biden’s regional advisor, Christopher Dodd; the head of the New York Federal Reserve, John Williams; Tesla CEO Elon Musk; Chevron’s Michael Wirth, CEO Franklin Templeton; the CIO of BlackRock, James Keenan, and executives from JP Morgan, as well as US congressmen and officials from Arab countries, such as Saudi Arabia and Dubai.

Exchanges with Musk

In his parallel agenda, the president plans to meet with the business magnate, Elon Musk, owner of Tesla, SpaceX and the social network in the United States, Gerardo Werthein.

It will be the second time that they will meet face to face, after the visit that the Argentine president made to the South African magnate at one of the Tesla headquarters in Austin, Texas, less than a month ago.

milei muskPresident Javier Milei will meet again with Elon Musk less than a month after the first meeting.

In that first meeting, both expressed in person the good relationship they had on social networks with a photo with their thumbs up, and began to strengthen their ideological alignment in the world.

In this second meeting it is expected that they will delve into the real prospects for the businessman to arrive in our country with investment. Specifically, about the possibility that the CEO of Space X lands in Argentina with its satellite internet service and can invest in the development of a lithium factory.

On the other hand, Javier Milei also plans to meet with the head of FIFA, Gianni Infantino. In this case, the Head of State plans to present his project to promote Sports Joint Stock Companies (SAD) in local football, an initiative that the libertarian administration is currently promoting at the discursive level.

The economic agenda

The delegation that accompanied the president is completed by the Chief of Staff, Nicolás Posse; the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo. Both will have a parallel agenda in which they will host meetings with important foreign investors, bankers and CEOs participating in the global convention.

In particular, Minister Luis Caputo will dedicate special attention to Managing Director Georgieva, who is still reluctant to enable a new IMF disbursement to open the exchange rate, a campaign promise about which the Libertarian Government has expressed that it needs some US$ 15,000 million to make it a reality.

In Davos, Milei also met Georgieva and held a meeting with the head of the IMF.

Milei himself expressed himself along those lines as soon as he landed in the United States. True to his style, he dedicated himself to installing topics through his social networks, with special emphasis on messages about economic issues.

With a message on his personal X account, President Javier Milei returned to a topic that already generated some of his reflections this week: the appreciation of the peso, and its refusal to devalue.

“I am very amused by those ‘economists’ who have historically been liberticidal and advocated for all types of control (especially on the external level) who, when faced with formal proposals that invalidate the hypothesis of the appreciated peso, take refuge in answering ‘the stocks'” , the president posted.

On Saturday he had published another comment written in a similar way regarding the exchange rate. “I am very amused by some of those ‘economists’ who talk about exchange rate delays and who, in the face of the change in fundamentals, hide behind the fact that there is CEPO, when until not long ago they were talking about how we could live with a gap of 40/60% since today it is null. THEY ARE WEIRD…”, he had posted.

If there are no changes to the agenda, Milei and the delegation will return on May 7 to continue focusing on unblocking support in the Senate that will allow them to advance in the treatment of the Bases law and continue preparations for the May Pact, scheduled for 25th of the month in the province of Córdoba.
