“Today more than ever it is essential to turn to Cali culture to recover our city.” With this call, Camilo Murcia, director of the Special Administrative Unit of Public Services (Uaesp), warned about the high risk of flooding that Cali has in the midst of the rains that are intensifying due to the La Niña Phenomenon.

The official made the vehement call for Cali residents to take responsibly and seriously the message of not throwing waste into rainwater channels, sewers and drains to avoid flooding in this rainy season.

“Garbage does not reach the rainwater channels alone, so it is essential to know and use the routes for the final disposal of waste,” said Murcia, reiterating the importance of Caleños making use of the Line 110 to properly manage bulky waste such as mattresses, cabinets or furniture and thus prevent them from being thrown into the drainage system, which will lead to flooding of streets and homes.

Murcia invited the people of Cali to find out about the days and times in which companies providing cleaning services pass through their areas to collect waste.

Likewise, the director of the Uaesp warned that those who do not comply with the responsibility of properly disposing of their waste and debris will be sanctioned. “We have a penalty established in the Police Code that ranges from 4 to 32 minimum wages,” he said.

The District Administration, in addition to appealing to citizen awareness and culture, invites people to make use of the different channels available for the proper management of waste in Cali. In the case of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW), the duty is to contact an authorized debris manager.

When repairs are carried out in homes and between 1 and 3 cubic meters of waste are handled, the telephone numbers of the Asomutual de ‘chaneros’ are 350 352 11 58 and 350 351 94 11.

The final disposal sites for RCD, authorized by the competent environmental authority, are located in neighboring municipalities (Candelaria, Puerto Tejada and Palmira) and are used by dump trucks and cleaning companies.

How to properly dispose of RCDs?

1. Contact a certified manager for the collection and transportation of CDW. If you have between one and three cubic meters of waste, it is recommended to call the ‘chaneros’. If there are more than three cubic meters of debris, it is suggested to contact dump truck drivers or cleaning companies. Keep in mind that one cubic meter of waste is equivalent to 25 sacks of material.

2. Agree on the value of the service with the authorized manager.

3. Deliver classified RCDs. Separate brick, concrete and ceramic materials from cardboard, wood, plastic, glass and metal coming from the job.

4. Once the service is completed, request the readiness certificate from the RCD manager.
