More than 400,000 inhabitants of Ibagué, in Tolima, They are without water service due to material damage that caused heavy rains at vital points of the municipal aqueduct, such as the intake and the collection system.

“We declare an emergency due to a water shortage,” said the mayor of Ibagué, Johanna Aranda, who chaired an extraordinary risk management council on Tuesday in the area where the material damage occurred.

The emergency occurred because the drifting material that came down in the middle of a flood of the Combeima River considerably affected the intake of the aqueduct, making it impossible to treat the water.

Due to the emergency, the mayor’s office suspended in-person classes for thousands of students in public educational institutions and some campuses went online from home.

To deal with the emergency, the Ibagué Aqueduct and Sewer Company (Ibal), enabled the line 313-3921214 so that citizens can request their neighborhoods the service of tank trucks with water.

“We are going to attend to the orders, but the priority of the tank trucks is for hospitals, clinics, health units, educational institutions, the Picaleña prison, Permanente Central, among others,” said Érika Palma, manager of Ibal.

Edward Amaya, government secretary, stated that the Police and the Army support the community with their tank trucks to address the shortage of liquid in the neighborhoods and communes.

“We are monitoring so that the owners of car washes do not provide that service during the next 24 hours,” said Amaya.

Sebastián Perdomo, manager of the Ibagué Sports Institute (Imdri)
pointed out that the difficult situation also led them to cancel training at talent schools and close important venues such as the Manuel Murillo Toro stadium, Parque Deportivo, Sports Unit on 42nd Street, among others.

The mayor’s office asked households to save water, because due to the severity of the damage to the aqueduct, there is no date or time for the restoration of service.
