Since the nineties, the Municipality of San José remained under the same administration; it could be inferred that this long period has allowed the administration to develop a municipal management strategy focused on the economic and social well-being of its inhabitants. However, sustainable human development indicators contradict this statement, revealing a context of poverty in contrast to the financial and productive opportunities of the canton.

In financial terms, it is the municipality with the largest budget in the country, in addition to being the one with the largest number of civil servants, and with respect to productivity, the Central canton of San José represents approximately a quarter of the total production of the country, according to data from the State of the Nation Program 2022

However, sustainable human development indicators project a discouraging outlook for the Central canton of San José. In 2020, the Cantonal Human Development Index (IDHC) ranked San José in 34th place nationally, while the Cantonal Multidimensional Poverty Index (IPMc) placed it in 41st position nationally.

That is why last May 1st had a different mystique. Without a doubt, the transfer of powers in the Municipality marked a milestone in the democratic history of the capital and the country, since we are facing a change that represents the beginning of a new era for our city. This change, in addition to being generational, implies an unprecedented opportunity to address inherited and current challenges with a new perspective.

Despite the enormous challenges and expectations that must be faced, such as corruption and poor urban planning and public services, they also represent opportunities to innovate, collaborate and work together in the search for creative and sustainable solutions.

The multiparty agreement in the San José Municipal Council arises as a response to the need to face these challenges and take advantage of the opportunities that arise, from a perspective of building from diversity, with an approach focused on the needs of the majority and a vision of inclusion and progress.

It is crucial to highlight the role of citizens in this process, not only for expressing their desire for change through voting, but also for the responsibility of actively participating in the process of transformation of the capital, at all levels of public policy. .

The shift in power provides an invaluable opportunity to build a brighter future for San José, with determination, vision and collaboration. It results in a good time and conditions to look forward and work together to make San José a new horizon and a model of human and social development for the rest of the country.
