He Port of Coquimbo managed to establish a new milestone in its history after the call of a container ship chartered by Maerskwhich arrived within the framework of the recently started citrus export season.

Specifically, the GSL Tripoli was established as the ship of greater length to arrive at the Coquimba port area, setting the mark to be surpassed at 294 meters of LOA.

The motor ship, registered under the flag of Liberia and 32 meters wide, carried out the transfer of 100 reefer units that will be used in the fruit and vegetable company. The operation lasted for one shift, being managed by Ian Taylor.

The milestone was only possible thanks to the entry into operation of the Site 3 that the dealership operates Puerto Coquimbo Terminal (TPC). The new finger-type dock was officially inaugurated on December 7, 2023, but in October of that same year it received its first ship.

One of the main intentions behind the creation of the new dock was to provide the port with a site capable of receiving larger and larger vessels, thinking about the care of container ships and promoting the activity of that maritime transport sector. burden.

In addition, it provided the port area with the necessary characteristics to handle more of its own cargo. Coquimbo Region, especially with regard to the boarding and unloading of containers. The treaty enhances local imports and exports (such as fruit and vegetables) and the Atacama Region; At the same time, it is positioned as a space of resilience for the port-logistics system.

In line with the above, the new cranes and the 14 meters of draft offered by Site 3 (which exceeds the 9.4 of sites 1 and 2) have generated the attraction for new shipping companies to consider making calls in Coquimbo, an example of these are the private ones Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Maersk, which arrived for the first time in the 2023-2024 fruit export season.

It is worth mentioning that the GSL Tripoli, a 15-year-old ship with a capacity of 5,300 TEU (1,200 reefer), was previously linked to the Chilean South American Vapor Company (CSAV) under the name of CSAV Suape.
