From his ‘X’ account, the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, reacted to the announcement by the National Electoral Council to begin the study of a presentation of charges against the Colombia Humana campaign for alleged illegal financing of the 2022 campaign. According to the president, this is arbitrary and an attempt “to disrespect the popular vote.” Because of this, he called members of his party both inside and outside the country.
The investigation by the National Electoral Council arises from a presentation by judges Álvaro Hernán Prada and Benjamín Ortiz who officially filed before the Plenary Chamber of the corporation, the formulation presentation, and indictment of charges against Gustavo Petro’s campaign for alleged illegal financing thereof. The president of Ecopetrol, Ricardo Roa, is also being followed in the investigation.
The investigation is based on the alleged contributions of Fecode and the USO to the Petro campaign that were not reported to the Clear Accounts application; with these resources the campaign would have violated the limits allowed by law. On the other hand, the investigation being followed against the current president of Ecopetrol has to do with the alleged contribution of 2,000 million pesos, represented in a plane, to the campaign. The device would belong to the creators of an allegedly illegal cryptocurrency called Daily Cop.
Once the report has been filed, there must be a majority in the organization to result in a sanction. This sanction would cover the president’s party, Colombia Humana, and would authenticate copies, if sufficient evidence was found, to the Chamber’s Impeachment Commission, the only one in charge of investigating the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro.
