The House Committee on Appropriations is hearing from dozens of Indian Country leaders who are testifying about their funding needs for fiscal year 2025. This is the audio from the morning session of Day 1. The witnesses are testifying before the House Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies. Members of the panel will use the information as they develop the appropriations bill that funds the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Indian Education, the Indian Health Service and other key agencies that carry out the federal government’s trust and treaty responsibilities to tribes and their citizens. The subcommittee is led by Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), who serves as Republican chair and Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), who is the Democratic ranking member. The leaders are vowing to work in a bipartisan fashion to develop the funding bill.
