  • Tarapacá Energy and Transportation and Telecommunications They coordinate intersectoral efforts to address cable theft and promote the safe removal of unused cables together with the local electrical and telecommunications companies.

During a meeting chaired by the Seremis of Energy and Transport and Telecommunications of Tarapacá, Séfora Sidgman and Pedro Medalla, this problem that affects citizens was addressed and the current situation of cable theft in the region was analyzed, as well as the challenges and best practices to prevent it.

Likewise, the authorities highlighted the importance of collaboration between different actors, including electrical service companies, police authorities and the local community, to implement strategies to remove disused cables.

Seremi Zifora Sidgman emphasized that the proper removal of disused cables is the responsibility of electrical and telecommunications companies, noting that “the abandonment of obsolete cables can represent a significant risk for people traveling on the streets, causing interruptions in supply electric and represent an obstacle to safe urban development. This action must necessarily be carried out with the region’s electric company, who has always been present in these operations, and the telecommunications companies, since they are the owners and operators of said operations. assets”.

Regarding cable theft, Sidgman added, “it can have serious consequences for the community in terms of safety and quality of life. “It is necessary to take preventive measures together with the police and citizens to deter these illegal practices.”

On the other hand, from the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications they reiterated the document which indicates the powers that municipalities have to order the removal of cables when these elements are not associated with the effective provision of services; are harming the main use of the goods where they are placed or located; and do not comply with current regulations, including the respective municipal ordinances.

In this sense, the Seremi of Transportation and Telecommunications, Pedro Medalla, indicated that, “for us as a Ministry it is very important that our work results in improving the quality of life of people and we know that an important part of that means having clean cities. , safe and without aerial debris. For this reason, instances like these are very productive, but, in addition, it is important to emphasize that today the municipalities have the powers to order and organize the removal of disused telecommunications cables; finally, the work between the different actors is what will allow us solve people’s needs.

On the other hand, the Transportation and Telecommunications authority added that, “in relation to the problem of cable theft, it will be addressed through intersectoral work that necessarily involves security agencies, and as a seremia we will contribute to the coordination.”

The meeting concluded with the coordination of an intersectoral working group on cable theft, to develop a plan that includes prevention and public awareness measures. Regional authorities also invite the community to actively collaborate in this effort, reporting any suspicious activity related to cable theft by calling #4242.
