‘Joints for incidence’, a project to empower the women of Santa Marta

The Mayor’s Office of Santa Marta, through the Secretariat of Women and Gender Equality, through the joint agenda with UN Women and Universidad del Norte, ratify their commitment to building an environment where each woman feels valued, empowered and capable of achieving its maximum potential.

Within the framework of the ‘Beyond the flags we are women’ project of UN Women and the Universidad del Norte, the ‘Community Meetings’ initiative is promoted, a strategy to strengthen and empower the community advocacy of Colombian and Venezuelan women in Santa Marta, supported by the United States Office of Population, Refugees and Migrants (PRM).

Since April, the project has launched the community empowerment strategy whose purpose is to promote innovative ideas through the exchange of knowledge about public policies, advocacy, communication, gender and migration between Colombian women and Venezuelan migrants. The first meeting of this ‘gathering’ included the participation of 31 women, whose strength illuminated the Hotel Catedral Plaza, providing an invaluable opportunity to join forces in the fight against gender violence, and promoting equality and respect for rights. of all people, regardless of their nationality or origin.

Through these ‘meetings’, women will build an advocacy plan and microprojects for the development of actions that generate a territorial impact, based on strengthening knowledge about the methodology for constructing community proposals.

Ingrid Gómez Ceballos, Secretary of Women and Gender Equality of the District Mayor’s Office of Santa Marta, said: “as strategic allies, hand in hand with Mayor Carlos Pinedo Cuello, we are pleased to be part of the third phase of the implementation project, the which allows a dialogue in which we are aware of the challenges, including transnational ones, that women face and how the development of active citizenship, which is one of the things we want to strengthen, is not only related to Colombian women, but also to integration. of Venezuelan women.”

The active participation of women in advocacy spaces is crucial to guarantee equitable representation and diversity of perspectives in decision-making. When women have a say in issues that affect their lives, a more just and inclusive society is promoted.

“The meeting sessions that we will have will allow them to strengthen the local protection nodes, through meetings in which they will devise, design and plan among themselves a political impact that transforms their community,” said Ingrid Saavedra Palacio, Territorial leader of Uninorte project in Santa Marta.
