Among the advances that will be announced at the congress, the Professor Benitez del Castillo presents a new treatment for the so-called ‘Dry Eye‘. Benítez states that “the new corneal surface modulator Relys is a product with a different mechanism of action than the usual tear substitutes that exist on the market for the treatment of Dry Eye.”
Relys is a new eye drops which helps to improve the corneal epithelium and make Dry Eye controllable. Unlike artificial tears, an ocular surface modulator consists of substances that interact with the ocular surface, mainly with the epithelium, promoting homeostasis, reducing inflammation, and initiating regeneration of the ocular surface.
Professor Benítez del Castillo considers the following: «I do not like the term artificial tears, in some countries, they consider that term too pompous, so they call them tear substitutes. The artificial tears that we have on the market are nothing like natural tears. So what is the Relys? It is not a tear substitute, it is a ocular surface modulator, a substance that has totally different actions than moisturizing agents or even eye drops that have multiple actions. In this case, Relys reduces inflammation, repairs the conjunctival and corneal epithelia and, of course, improves the patient’s symptoms, ensuring that they have more comfort, that they have no discomfort and, above all, that their eye is healthy.
