‘Addressing the challenges’ is the slogan of the Second Colombian Banana Congress 2024, which in accordance with a recommendation from the Board of Directors of the Association of Banana Growers of Magdalena and La Guajira, Asbama, ceases to be of the Caribbean and becomes an event from Colombia.

Moving from the Colombian Caribbean to a national dimension arises from the needs and challenges of the banana sector in Colombia, discussed and analyzed in different working groups worldwide in which Asbama interacts with governments, agro-industrial companies and the international market.

José Francisco Zúñiga Cotes, Executive President of Asbama, explained that as the Board of Directors the decision is made due to the escalation of these challenges that not only affect the Caribbean region but also Colombia and the world:

“This is a congress that has no limitations, the entire Colombian banana sector is invited and feels that it has some interest in participating, in knowing what is happening on the international stage and we as the banana sector open the doors to them,” he said.

Commercial challenges of the sector; Phytosanitary challenges; Climate change, adaptation and sustainability; Technology and innovation; and Security, will be the five major thematic axes that will be developed for two days in this great event of the Colombian banana sector, which can be attended by: members, university students, workers, farm administrators, personnel involved in transportation and export logistics. , marketing companies and all interest groups that have registered in a timely manner.

This latest edition of the Congress will take place at the Estelar Santamar Hotel and Convention Center, on Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24 of this year. The agenda will be developed by national and international experts who will provide guidelines on the problems and new challenges of the sector in Colombia, producer and consumer countries.

“This event is something that the sector requests. Within our affiliates we are always addressing different topics and the idea is that we can address them comprehensively. Banana is a supremely important sector for the city, and as banana growers we also have the commitment to move the economy. And this meeting, which is so relevant, is going to bring a lot of contribution to tourism for Santa Marta,” said the Executive President of Asbama, José Francisco Zúñiga Cotes.
