Tomorrow, Thursday, May 9, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) will carry out a general strike that will significantly affect public transportation in Argentina. Bus drivers, subway drivers and railway machinists will join the strike, which will imply the suspension of transport services during that day.

This measure of force poses a challenge for workers who need to travel to get to their jobs. One of the most recurring questions is whether companies will be able to deduct the work day for those employees who cannot attend due to the unemployment.

As established by the National Constitution in its article 14 bis, workers have the right to strike without being sanctioned by their employers. However, the generally accepted principle is that “no work, no pay”, which It means that if a worker does not provide his service, the employer is not obliged to remunerate him for that day.

In this context, Manuel Adorni, presidential spokesperson, announced that the work day will be deducted from state employees who join the strike. However, he clarified that this measure will not apply to those workers who are unable to reach their workplaces due to the lack of public transportation.

Regarding transportation services, the DOTA company could be the only one operating during the strike, since it manages more than 50 bus lines in the City and Province of Buenos Aires. However, in the event that its workers join the strike, the company must comply with 50% of the previously established service.

The general strike on May 9 will have the support of various unions, among which are La Fraternidad, the Railway Union, the General Union of Trade Union Associations of Transport Workers (Ugatt), the UTA, the Metrodelegates, and the Confederation. Argentina of Transport Workers (CATT), among others.
