The ceiba tree at the San José Artesano roundabout dies despite the efforts of the Algeciras City Council

As if it were a terminally ill person, the Algeciras City Council announced this Wednesday the “death certificate” of the ceiba which almost two years ago he planted at one of the roundabouts on the road to El Rinconcillo, located near San José Artesano.

The Asociation Agaden-Environmentalists in Action already warned at the end of April about the fatal decline of the Ceiba speciosa -popularly called drunk stick-, when they pointed out that he could be “dead or in a decrepit state.” The most ominous omens have come true.

The delegate councilor of Parks and Gardens, Angel Martinezexplained that the ceiba was planted in June 2022 in the middle of the roundabout and that, since that moment, it has been subjected to “constant inspections” by municipal technicians, upon verifying that its development “was not as desired.” A green shoot or development on its branches, nor flowering was ever observed in this species. non-native.

For these same reasons, continues the City Council, “consultations were raised to top level arborists” and treatments consisting of “contributions of natural stimulators to the roots, as well as to the aerial part, were carried out, with the intention of promoting the emission of new roots, branches and leaves.” All in vain.

“In the last technical visit carried out last April, so much root rot as a lack of vigor in them, while the branches appeared dry to different tests carried out, which showed the need for replacement despite having put All the means within the reach of the Delegation of Parks and Gardens to be able to save it”, concludes the Consistory.

The Algeciras City Council also announced that last night, in order to minimize the effects that the work could have on vehicle circulation, it was replaced by another similar species without this having entailed any cost to the municipal coffers. Good date to plant: May 15, holiday of San isidro labrador, patron saint of farmers. May the saint bless the new ceiba.
