La Paz, May 25 (EFE).- Bolivia rejected this Saturday that the United States keeps Cuba on the list of countries that sponsor terrorism and considered that this is a “serious act of interference” that has the objective of destabilizing order. internal to the Caribbean country.

“Bolivia expresses its resounding rejection of the list prepared unilaterally by the United States that, selectively, qualifies Cuba as a State that sponsors terrorism,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Bolivian Foreign Ministry considered that the inclusion of Cuba on that list “violates the most basic principles of the United Nations charter, attacks in a multidimensional manner and causes serious violations of the human rights” of Cubans.

The United States indicated last week that it maintains Cuba on the list of State sponsors of terrorism although it admitted that it cooperates with that country in some activities to combat this crime.

The Joe Biden Administration maintains Cuba on that list despite removing it from another list of countries that “do not fully cooperate with anti-terrorist efforts” (NFCC, in English).

Washington and Havana resumed police cooperation in 2023, including on counterterrorism efforts, so the State Department decided that continuing to certify Cuba as a country that is not fully cooperating “is no longer appropriate.”

The inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries that sponsor terrorism in January 2021 was one of the last decisions made by the Donald Trump Administration before leaving power.

The United States then justified the measure by saying that the presence on the island of members of the Colombian guerrilla of the National Liberation Army (ELN), who were in Havana to maintain peace negotiations with the Government of Colombia.

Cuba had been part of that list since 1982 but left in 2015, during the rapprochement stage of the then US president Barack Obama (2009-2017) that was later stopped by Trump. EFE
