Latin American Tourism Summit begins today in Santa Marta

Santa Marta will be the headquarters of the First Latin American and Caribbean Summit on Global Sustainable Tourism. The event will begin tomorrow and will end on Wednesday. It will also have the presence of 20 countries with their corresponding delegations and different national and district authorities.

The place where this event will take place is the Irotama Resorts Hotel, and will have the support of the Destination Nature Program of (USAID); The More Competitive Colombia Program, a joint collaboration between the Swiss embassy in Colombia, Swisscontact and the District Mayor’s Office of Santa Marta, will be part of this important project.

This significant program will be attended by actors who contribute valuable contributions to tourism, consisting of the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Colombia, Dr. Germán Umaña Mendoza; GSTC CEO Mr. Randy Durband; USAID Mission Director, Mrs. Anupama Rajaraman; Mr. Julián Guerrero, director of the USAID Nature Destination Program; Mr. Eric Mayoraz, Swiss Ambassador to Colombia, the mayor of Santa Marta, doctor Carlos Pinedo Cuello. The initiative is joined by the Hotel and Tourism Sector headed by Mr. Omar García Silva, executive president of Cotelco Magdalena, representing the hotel industry and tourism in Santa Marta and Magdalena.

Who will share opinions, experiences and knowledge, for the creation of strategies that position the destination as one of the greatest references in sustainable tourism at a national and international level.

Santa Marta is the protagonist of great panoramas that promote sustainability. According to the GSTC, the city was chosen to hold the first summit due to its actors and experiences in the area of ​​tourism that converge in the territory, such as the most important national natural parks: Sierra Nevada, Minca, Tayrona, and its important indigenous communities, Ciudad Perdida accredited as Historical Heritage of the ancestral cultures that are part of the Samarian society, sightings of striking birds, two beaches that have blue flag certifications, hiking, mangroves, delight Samaria cuisine, and experience magical realism in the oldest city in South America.
