The Municipality of La Plata closed this Saturday Italy Square with the aim of beginning the enhancement and revaluation work. The initiative is part of a project promoted by the mayor Julio Alak so that the city’s public spaces regain their shine.
The tasks to be carried out include the relocation of the monument to the geographic center of the square, recovering its original position, and the generation of a pedestrian promenade with seating and recreation areas in the space that is currently used for parking. These works will be carried out with municipal funds.
The project includes the installation of new lighting and street furniture while the children’s games will be conditioned while maintaining their current location. The flooring, meanwhile, will be renewed and unified with gray granite tiles that will guarantee a uniform level throughout the surface, and the perimeter will be paved to allow better circulation.
It is estimated that this intervention will be completed within a period of 4 months. In this sense, local authorities indicated that the forest heritage will be preserved and strengthened with the introduction of native species, the planting of 110 new trees and the missing specimens on the path, and a total of 855 square meters of green space will be added. .

The renovation of Plaza Italia received the support of the Consul General of Italy, Pierluigi Schettino, and various Italian entities based in the city. In addition, the street vendors who had set up stalls in the place accepted the local government’s proposal to relocate them and carry out their activity within the framework of current regulations.

The entity, as announced, will be the beneficiary of an institutional strengthening program that will allow it to optimize the provision of its services. Through the agreement, APRILP will transfer the parking lot installed within the green space at 7 and 44 and, in exchange, will receive compensation of $8,000,000 per month.

The street vendors of Plaza Italia reached an agreement with the Municipality of La Plata and adhered to the proposed reconversion program to regularize their activity and develop it within the framework of current regulations, moving to a new property.

The decision of the stallholders takes place within the framework of the Illegal Street Sales Reconversion Programan initiative that promotes the strengthening of production and its territorial planning by offering sellers to opt for commercial relocation and occupy a sales position in a property enabled in V Meridian.
The Municipality will be responsible for guaranteeing the necessary infrastructure for the exercise of commercial activity. Likewise, it proposes access to training courses in trades, through training offers that the Commune will make available to interested parties with their subsequent coordination with La Plata companies, under the premise of promoting their insertion into the world of work.
