Magdalena, with alarming shortcomings, ranked 16th in competitiveness at the national level

According to the Departmental Competitiveness Indices (IDC), the most critical points are in terms of basic and secondary education, as well as sophistication and economic diversification.

The Private Competitiveness Council and the Universidad del Rosario have published the most recent results of the Departmental Competitiveness Index (IDC), positioning the department of Magdalena in 16th place out of the 32 evaluated in Colombia, including Bogotá.

Magdalena obtained a score of 4.98 out of 10, reflecting a slight decline of 0.3 points in critical areas such as basic and secondary education, as well as sophistication and economic diversification. This decrease contrasts with notable improvements in the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) and health, where it managed to increase its score by 0.4 points compared to the previous year.

The report highlights that Magdalena shows significant strengths in environmental sustainability and economic sophistication and diversification. In environmental sustainability, the department excels in indicators such as reducing deforestation (score of 9.75) and low CO2 emissions from mobile sources (score of 9.26). In sophistication and diversification, it stands out especially in the diversification of export markets, with a score of 9.38.

However, Magdalena faces considerable challenges in areas such as the financial system, where financial inclusion and insurance coverage figures are notably low, with scores below 2.3 out of 10. In innovation, the department shows significant difficulties, occupying the last place at the national level in indicators such as registered patents and facing challenges in investment in scientific, technological and innovative activities.

The methodological adjustment implemented in this edition of the IDC allows a more precise comparison of historical results and a better evaluation of competitiveness over time between the 32 departments.
