This June 1, within the framework of the Public Account, President Gabriel Boric reported that Chile will join demand driven by South Africa v. Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Specifically, the President commented that “I have the duty to refer today to the critical situation in the Gaza Strip. We will never stop being outraged by indiscriminate and absolutely disproportionate actions against innocent civilians, particularly Palestinian women and children, which the Israeli Army is carrying out.”

“There are already more than 35 thousand dead, a catastrophic human situation and the infrastructure in Gaza practically devastated. “These acts require a firm, permanent response from the international community.”he added.

“For this reason, in addition to the humanitarian support that we have provided to Palestine, the call for consultation from our ambassador in Israel and presenting, together with Mexico, a referral of the situation in Palestine to the International Criminal Court, I have decided that Chile will join and support the case that South Africa presented against Israel before the International Court of Justice in The Hague within the framework of the UN genocide convention“, he communicated.

What did the Palestinian Community of Chile say?

Regarding this announcement, the Palestinian Community of Chile expressed his “deep gratitude to the Government of Chile for its support of the demand submitted by South Africa to the International Court of Justice”.

This action reflects in an exemplary way the coherence of the State policy of Chilebased on compliance with international law, as well as on the promotion and respect of human rights and international humanitarian law,” he added in a statement.

“We consider that Chile’s adherence to this measure, together with countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, among others, It is of utmost importance“said the community.

“Chile has a special responsibility with Palestine, due to its proximity, not physical, but human, it is one of the five countries with the largest population of Palestinian origin in the world,” he said.

“The only way to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region is through the implementation and respect of international legality.”he commented.

In this context, he pointed out that “the activation and support of courts with international jurisdiction is transcendental, which play a key role in the promotion and implementation of justice and accountability.”

“We reiterate our gratitude and reaffirm our commitment to continue working to strengthen ties between Chile and Palestine, as well as to promote peace and justice,” concluded the Palestinian Community of Chile.
