Ni Una Menos: strategies and challenges to combat gender violence in La Rioja

This Monday, within the framework of the anniversary of the emergence of the movement Not one lessthe Secretary of Women and Diversity of The Rioja, Karen Navarrohighlighted the efforts in the fight against sexist violence carried out by the province, and indicated that already 350 cases of gender violence have been addressed so far this year.

“Two years ago we began to identify on a semi-annual basis the statistics and numbers that we handle in cases of assistance, in situations of violence. We work with an inter-institutional table that allows us to unify these numbers between the prosecutor’s office, the police and the Women’s Secretariat. Each institution “is addressing around 1,500 cases annually”the official explained.

In addition, from January to May 2024, the Rioja Women’s Secretariat addressed 350 cases of gender violence. “We are functioning as an auxiliary house of justice and we provide follow-up to each case”Navarro pointed out. According to the official, the southern area of the capital is the one with the highest number of cases, which is reflected in a greater concentration of police stations, due to high demand. “In other areas it is not that there is less violence, but that there is less institutional access to make complaints”Navarro said, underlining the importance of bringing services closer to all areas of the province.

In relation to the role of the police, and what their response is to gender violence, Navarro highlighted the key role that a 2021 resolution from the Secretariat is fulfilling: “We determined that each police station has a gender violence office, and that each security force agent receives training on the subject”said the official.

However, the Secretary of Women and Diversity stressed that the coordinated work between the different areas must not only continue, but must also be deepened. “In the province we have a lot of work to do, we have to continue organizing to understand that security and Justice are the predominant factors so that women can leave environments of violence”concluded the official.
