The Swedish Government announced this Monday its willingness to allow police forces to use real-time facial recognition technology through cameras in public places, for example to identify people suspected of certain crimes. The proposal occurs after that the European Union adopted rules in March to regulate the use of artificial intelligence that prohibit this practice except with some exceptions. Already in December, the Stockholm Executive authorized an investigation into the expansion of the powers of the security forces to use surveillance cameras.

The Minister of Justice, Gunnar Strommer, declared this Monday that the consultation aims to provide the “information” necessary to advance “considerably” in the use of cameras to combat crime. “Real-time facial recognition in public places should be allowed for crime-fighting purposes to the extent permitted by EU regulation,” said Kazimir Aberg, who led the research.

EU exceptions include the search for missing persons or possible victims of human trafficking or the prevention of threats of terrorist attacks.
