Ni Una Menos: politics overshadowed the origin of the movement

9 years ago, 80 cities in the country got tired of the number of women whose lives were unjustly taken and articulated the largest protest against gender violence in Argentine history. In this new opportunity, under the motto of Not one less and taking into account that there is a femicide every 33 hours, the fight in the streets will point directly against the Government.

Several towns will march on Monday afternoon. Although the original slogan revolved around the serious consequences of sexist violence, it has been diluted with the passage of time and today it will cover public roads in rejection of Javier Milei’s policies: “Down with the Bases Law and the DNU”, “With hunger and hatred there is no freedom”, “Not a Retiree Less” and “Not a Lesbian Less”.

In the City of Buenos Aires, particularly, the heart of the call will be in front of the National Congress starting at 4:30 p.m., and the reading of the document that fires against the ruling party’s measures is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. They will gather with signs, drums, handkerchiefs and songs.

The femicide of Chiara Páez was what sparked this movement in 2015. Verónica Camargo, her mother, told MDZ that it has been distorted. That is to say, although he believed that all struggles are valid, over time the thread was lost: “I will always be grateful to the first collective of the Not one less, the support and how they made my daughter’s murder visible from the first moment. But then that was over.”

Not One Less: the worrying figures

The numbers hide tragedies, injustices, losses and violence. According to the National Registry of Femicide of the Argentine Justice (RNFJA), in 2023 there were 250 direct victims of femicide, of which 245 were cis women, and the remaining 5 were transsexuals. 64% were carried out by partners or their ex-partners. In turn, almost 2,500 were registered in a decade.

There were 11 jurisdictions that had a rate of direct femicides per 100,000 women higher than the national average of 1.05 for 2023. Those with the worst figures were: Neuquén (2.31), Chaco (2.07), Formosa (1 .61), Santiago del Estero (1.58), San Luis (1.51), Salta (1.47), Tucumán (1.47), La Rioja (1.46), Jujuy (1.24), Corrientes (1.20) and Misiones (1.07). In some of them few cases occurred, but the rates are, in comparison, high due to their low population weight.

For its part, Mumalá’s latest report shows that, so far this year alone, 89 femicides have been recorded, one every 40 hours. Meanwhile, and to further aggravate this situation, there were 216 attempted femicides recorded, which could have translated into one every 17 hours if it had been carried out.

Since June 3, 2015, which is when the first outbreak Not one lessUntil May 30, 2024, 2,348 femicides were recorded in Argentina, of which 2,016 were direct, 61 transfemicides and 271 linked. Specifically, a woman was murdered every 33 hours.

Each province organizes its mobilization. La Pampa will not be the exception, and will keep in mind the name of Agustina Fernández, the young medical student who was murdered in Cipolletti in July 2022, and whose femicide was recently convicted. In dialogue with this medium, her mother, Silvana Cappello, reiterated her participation in this new mobilization, but with the slogan focused on her daughter and these painful figures.

Their fight will not necessarily go against the Government, but in the name of Agustina. He remembers her too much these days, not only because of the sentence her murderer received in May, but because of this Not one less and the fact that it will soon be two years since the tragedy. “In recent days I have seen news of more femicides, it makes me sick, the fight is increasingly uphill,” she added.

Ni Una Menos: the birth and the slogan that was lost

The trigger for this massive movement was the femicide of Chiara Páez. That straw that broke the camel’s back, that scream that finally escaped. The teenager from Santa Fe, just 14 years old, was murdered in 2015 by her boyfriend, after becoming pregnant and refusing to terminate the pregnancy.

It was such an unfair outburst that it had no choice but to break out in more than 80 cities and form that massive march on June 3, 2015, whose core was at the head of the National Congress and which demanded justice for all the victims: those who arrived to be news and those who are not. It was the largest protest against the gender violence in Argentine history; a sample of what happens when indignation, fatigue, fear and fury come together.

Verónica Camargo, Chiara’s mother, commented some time ago to MDZ how he lived this date 9 years ago: “I never imagined that the murder of my daughter would have such a magnitude. I always say the same thing, but that June 3 I was not aware of the dimension, the magnitude that the case had had “That day and the following days, seeing how the media showed the march and the arrival, I began to realize that it was a historic event to see the faces of Chiari and other girls on the screens, but it gave me courage.”

It had not been a month since her daughter had been murdered, when she traveled from Santa Fe to CABA to march for her and all the victims of sexist cruelty. She had mourned the death of other young women a thousand times, like Ángeles Rawson or Candela Rodríguez, without being able to imagine how that pain could enter the body of a mother; Unfortunately, it was her turn and those other mothers were her allies, with whom he connected in meetings and talks.

And everything began to take shape the night they found Páez’s body, with that first tweet from journalist Marcela Ojeda: “Aren’t we going to raise our voices? They are killing us!” Together with several colleagues they created the movement of Not one lesswhich even spread to several more countries.

At first, Verónica refused to participate due to the recent tragedy that surrounded her, but then she decided to join and this pink mass took care of her and welcomed her. At least in the beginning. “I will always be grateful to the first collective of the Not one less, the support and how they made my daughter’s murder visible from the first moment. But then that was over,” she closed.
