The judge grants guardianship of Salwa’s children to the grandparents

As planned, the judge of the Violence Against Women Court of La Rioja has granted guardianship of Salwa Zidan’s three children to the maternal grandparents. In an order, the magistrate thus attends to the request of the family of the woman, of Syrian nationality, allegedly murdered by her husband on July 8, 2023.

On May 15, the children’s grandparents and an uncle traveled to Logroño to attend the oral hearing in which the guardianship of the minors, who until then were in charge of the Social Services of the Autonomous Community, was decided.

Nothing now prevents the three children, ages 7, 9 and 11, from reuniting with their family in Berlin, the German city where they reside. However, the idea is that they do not travel until the end of the school year.

During the trial, held in the Violence Against Women Court, in which Salwa’s murder was investigated, both the Prosecutor’s Office and the Community were in favor of granting custody to the grandparents. All after the Provincial Court of La Rioja upheld an appeal presented by the family that legitimized them to claim guardianship.

Salwa was murdered on July 8, 2023. That day, a 44-year-old man of Syrian nationality was arrested after allegedly killing his 34-year-old wife at the home they shared at number 1, Plaza Martínez Flamarique. The crime occurred around 2:00 p.m. on a Saturday, although the trigger for the police action took place in the area around the Fourth Bridge, more than three kilometers away from the family home.

A citizen reported to 091 that a man had jumped into the waters of the Ebro River. Several agents came to the rescue and when they pulled him out of the waters they heard a brutal confession that they did not expect: SA had just killed his wife, also Syrian. . She was Salwa Zidan. After the crime, as residents of the couple’s neighborhood explained at the time, he had gone to pick up his three children from the Rafael Azcona Library and had taken them to the La Harinera area to supposedly throw them into the river as well.

At that moment, a hectic device was launched until Local Police officers, after forcing the door, found the woman bleeding and suffering from stab wounds. It was 2:40 p.m. on a hot Saturday.

The husband was taken to the National Police Headquarters and 72 hours later, the judge sent him to prison. For their part, the three children (two girls and a little boy) were left in the care of Social Services.

Salwa, her husband, and their three children arrived in La Rioja in June 2016 along with five other refugees. They came from the fields of Lebanon, where they fled after receiving threatening letters in their town, Rif Damascus. In Logroño they hoped to find a new life. She, psychologist; He, SA, industrial engineer and university professor. The Red Cross was in charge of hosting them for six months until, in view of their good adaptation and the progress made, they began to fly on their own. Of them, those responsible for the entity pointed out their “will and desire to learn.”
